Segment Tool: statistical commentary, January 2020
Published 14 January 2020
Main findings
This release of the Segment Tool shows data for NHS geographies for the first time. Data for England, English regions, and local authorities remains unchanged:
- in 2015 to 2017, life expectancy for males in Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) in England ranged from 74.2 years to 83.7 years. In the CCG with the lowest life expectancy the gap with England was 5.4 years
- for females in 2015 to 2017, CCG life expectancy ranged from 78.5 years to 86.6 years. In the CCG with the lowest life expectancy the gap with England was 4.7 years
- there are also large inequalities in life expectancy within CCG areas; between the most and least deprived fifth of areas within a CCG, the largest gap was 12 years for males and 10 years for females
- in many NHS geographical areas, higher mortality from circulatory disease, cancer, and respiratory disease are the main contributors to the life expectancy gap; however, there are variations between areas, and some areas where other causes of death, such as dementia, accidental poisoning and cirrhosis, make large contributions to the gap
- the breakdown by age group shows that in most NHS geographical areas higher mortality rates among those aged 60 and over contribute most to the gap in life expectancy; however, as with the breakdowns by cause of death, there are variations between areas
Background
The Segment Tool provides information on the causes of death and age groups that are driving inequalities in life expectancy at local area level. Targeting the causes of death and age groups which contribute most to the life expectancy gap should have the biggest impact on reducing inequalities.
The Segment Tool was first published in January 2014, and last updated in May 2019. The following changes have been made to the Segment Tool since the previous update:
- data for NHS geographies for the period 2015 to 2017 have been added. This includes data for NHS regions, NHS region local offices, Sustainability and Transformation Partnerships (STP), and Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG)
- an option to download an Excel file containing all data contained in the tool has been added to the ‘Breakdowns’ page
