About
The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) sponsors 15 national museums which provide free entry to their permanent collections. The data for this release are collected by the museums through sample surveys, with the exception of the information on educational visits and total visits, which are based on actual counts.
Revisions
Amendment on 7 February 2019: Minor amendments have been made to the Tate Gallery Group historic visitor figures from 2008/09 to 2013/14. These revisions have been marked in red in the associated tables and all other figures remain as previously published. The chart showing the Total number of visits to DCMS-sponsored museums and galleries 2002/03 to 2017/18 in the statistical release has also been updated to reflect the minor amendments made to the historic data for the years 2008/09 to 2013/14.
Amendment on 3 October 2018: The associated tables for this publication have been revised since there were first published on 26 September 2018 following the discovery of a minor error to the 2017/18 annual visitor figure for the National Portrait Gallery. Historic figures for the sponsored museums and galleries have also been revised to be consistent with the Museums and galleries monthly visits totals. More details are provided in the Revised Table 1.

Minor ammendments have been made to the Tate Gallery historic visitor figures for the years 2008/09 to 2013/14.
