Explanatory note: employment rate increase
Universal Credit supports people on low incomes out of and in work. A claimant is recorded as in employment if they have earnings recorded at any point during the assessment period that is active on the count date.
The latest release of Universal Credit official statistics shows an increase in the employment rate for all people on Universal Credit, and for people in the ‘Searching for Work’ conditionality regime from March to April 2020.
This increase could be due to new claimants using Universal Credit to top up their income, for example, having being furloughed, or new claimants who having been made unemployed and are receiving their final wage after claiming Universal Credit. Employment figures are published with an additional month’s lag due to data availability.
When the employment data is available for the May 2020 count we will be able to draw firmer conclusions regarding how much of the change is likely to be in part due to people who remain in employment. The next release will be published on 16 July 2020.
Management information
To provide more timely information on Universal Credit claims during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Universal Credit supplementary management information tables for declarations (claims) and advances for the period from 1 March 2020 have also been published.
