What is the difference between sex and gender?

As part of reporting on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) global indicators there is a requirement to look at data disaggregated by certain characteristics, including sex, gender, race, ethnicity, disability and more. This article will be the first of a series looking at the concepts behind these characteristics.
