Open Government Partnership
The Open Government Partnership provides an international platform for domestic reformers who want to make their governments more open and accountable to citizens.
The Open Government Partnership (OGP) was formally launched in New York on 20 September 2011. The 8 founding governments were:
- Brazil
- Indonesia
- Mexico
- Norway
- Philippines
- South Africa
- United Kingdom
- United States
There are now 61 OGP partner countries,, making up around a third of the world population. Civil society participation is vital to the OGP and has equal representation with governments in the OGP steering committee.
To join, the country needs to show a commitment to open government in areas such as fiscal transparency, access to information, disclosing politicians’ and senior officials’ salaries and public engagement.
The government must then publicly sign up to the Open Government Declaration and draw up a national action plan.
Read the UK draft National Action Plan.
