The UK and the United Nations 2016 General Assembly
Britain is committed to international development, peace and security, and a leading supporter of the international rules-based system. As one of only 5 permanent members of the UN Security Council and the only major power that meets both UN development and NATO defence targets our commitment to extensive cooperation with international partners remains steadfast.
The UN General Assembly (UNGA) High Level Week is the highlight of the global diplomatic calendar. It brings together leaders from the UN’s 193 Member States, international media and civil society for a week of summits, debates and meetings. The unique convening power of UNGA gives the opportunity to bring together the whole of the international community in making commitments on global issues.
The 71st UNGA in 2016 is Ban Ki-Moon’s last as Secretary-General and Obama’s last as President. Both will make speeches focusing on tackling the migration crisis. Other priorities for the UK include:
- aviation security
- accountability for the crimes of Daesh
- Somalia
- Syria
- anti-microbial resistance
- the Commonwealth
