Memorial picture of a Jewish martyr unveiled at the British Embassy Budapest
On 13 March the British Embassy Budapest hosted the unveiling and launch of the international tour of the Hannah Szenes memorial picture.
A martyr of WWII Hannah Szenes (Szenes Anikó in Hungarian) was a Hungarian Jew, a poet, who also served in the British Army. In her welcoming remarks Deputy Head of Mission Theresa Bubbear talked about Szenes’ heroism and the importance of human rights and tolerance, both of which the United Kingdom is a strong advocate. Together with artist and activist László Angyal she unveiled the picture, which then officially began its international tour. The event was closed with the singing of Szenes’ famous poem, Eli, Eli.
The British Embassy in Budapest is an active supporter of human rights. In April 2012 the Embassy hosted and Ambassador Knott spoke at the Hungarian book launch of Poems on the Holocaust, while in August 2012 Deputy Head of Mission Theresa Bubbear co-opened the Olympic exhibition in the Hungarian Jewish Museum.
