Science and the media on the agenda at the OECD
The UK Delegation hosted a breakfast event to discuss the voice of science in the media
The UK’s Science Media Centre (SMC) visited the OECD to discuss communicating science to the public through news outlets. The SMC is an independent organisation which seeks to inform journalism by supporting scientists, experts and the press, offering advice and briefing particularly on controversial news stories.
At a breakfast roundtable hosted by UK Ambassador Nick Bridge, SMC Director Fiona Fox presented the Centre’s work in helping policy-makers and the public get the best information on science. The OECD’s Bob Diderich also gave a presentation on how the Organisation is seeking to engage with this issue. The event was attended by OECD staff working in both communications and scientific evidence, and there followed an in-depth discussion about how best to communicate difficult issues effectively, increasing the quality of public debate and promoting better policy dissemination.
