What does UK-Canada scientific cooperation look like?
Photo competition launched to build connections between scientists and researchers in the UK and Canada
Can you creatively communicate your research with just one photo, a snappy title and a short description? Can you capture the public’s interest, raise their curiosity, or get them thinking about collaboration and scientific research in a different way? Are you interested in cooperation in your area of research between the UK & Canada?
The British High Commission in Ottawa invites the research community from the UK and Canada to take part in the first Images of Research photographic competition. Whether you work in the physical, medical, biological, social sciences or engineering, we want you to share your work with the wider world.
We are seeking original photographs illustrating research in the fields of:
- energy & environment
- life sciences & medical research
- advanced engineering & aerospace
- agriculture
- social innovation
The winning entry will be the image that shares the wonder, beauty and curiosity of what you do, why you do it and how potential UK-Canada cooperation could impact our countries and make a difference.
The top two images will be awarded economy airfare and accommodation (up to £1000) for one researcher’s travel either to or from the UK to pursue their research cooperation. The UK Science & Innovation Network will help facilitate networking opportunities and connections for you during your visit. Travel must be completed before March 2016. Winners will also receive a print of their image for each of their home institutions.
How to enter:
Entries for the competition must be submitted via our online form. The closing date for entries is 12:00 EST on 2 November 2015. The winners will be announced Friday 6 November 2015.
- Take a picture that illustrates your interesting scientific research;
- Provide an interesting title (3-5 words);
- Write a 150 word abstract describing how and why your research matters to others;
- Write a 100 word explanation of how UK-Canada collaboration can benefit the field of research;
The photographic image can be anything that captures attention but must be related to the research you are interested in pursuing between the UK and Canada. Don’t be afraid to be creative. Consider the outputs of your research and look at where its effects will be felt. Your image can feature an individual, situation or event, or even a gadget. Entries should aim to raise the general public’s curiosity about the research issue that you are illustrating.
We also encourage you to submit your image to the Canadian Science Policy Conference.
Judging and criteria
Judging will be conducted by a panel including a member of UK Science & Innovation Network team in Canada, a member of the Media & Public Affairs team at the British High Commission in Ottawa, and an external photographer. The panel will take into account the photographic image, the title, the associated short description, and the impact of UK-Canada collaboration to the research within the thematic areas listed.
