Check a teacher's record
Check a teacher's record before they start working in your school or college.
Applies to England
You must check a teacher’s record before they start working for you in a school or college in England.
If you use a teacher supply agency you must make sure they’ve checked the teacher’s record.
A teacher’s record tells you whether they have:
- qualified teacher status (QTS) or early years teacher status (EYTS)
- passed their induction
- national professional qualifications (NPQ) or mandatory qualifications for teaching pupils with sensory impairments
- been prohibited from teaching by the Teaching Regulation Agency or General Teaching Council for England
- been found guilty of serious misconduct but not prohibited from teaching
Before you check their record, you:
- will need their last name and date of birth
- should confirm the teacher’s identity
Qualified teacher learning and skills (QTLS) status
A teacher’s record will not tell you if they have QTLS. You need to check the Society for Education and Training professional register.
School managers and governors
There’s a separate list of people who are not allowed to manage or govern schools. This is called the section 128 list.
