Check if you are affected by the public service pensions remedy

If you are a member, or are the beneficiary of a deceased member of a public service pension scheme, check if you are affected by the public service pensions remedy (McCloud).

The public service pensions remedy was introduced to address the age discrimination that was found in the reforms to public service pension schemes that were implemented from 2014. It aims to make sure that affected members are, as far as possible, put back in the position they would have been in if the discrimination had not occurred.

Who is affected

You may be affected by the remedy if you were a member of a public service pension scheme on or before 31 March 2012 and between 1 April 2014 and 31 March 2022.

Before you start

To check if you’re affected by the remedy, you will need to know:

  • whether you were a member of any public service pension schemes between 1 April 2014 and 31 March 2022
  • whether you or your public service pension scheme paid an annual allowance tax charge for any tax year between 6 April 2014 and 5 April 2022
  • whether you or your public service pension scheme paid a lifetime allowance charge for any tax year from 6 April 2015
  • if you hold or held lifetime allowance protection at any time
