Who can claim a refund
You can ask for a refund if you’ve either:
- paid too much in error
- amended your Economic Crime Levy return and you now owe less
If the amount due has changed because the original information you gave us is wrong or your circumstances have changed, you must submit an amended return before asking for a refund.
What you need
To claim your refund, you’ll need:
- your company name
- the refund amount
- the reason for claiming a refund
- the account details you used to make the payment
- your contact details — name, email address and phone number
How to claim
You must use the online service to ask for your refund.
You’ll need to sign in to the service with the Government Gateway user ID you used to register for the Economic Crime Levy.

If you have already registered, you will need your Economic Crime Levy registration number. You can find this:
- in your Economic Crime Levy account
- in your HMRC business tax account if you have one
- on the confirmation email HMRC sent you to confirm your Economic Crime Levy return had been submitted
