Director information hub: Engaging with HMRC

As a director, you might be reluctant to contact HMRC unless you are asked directly to do so

Help us to improve the director information hub by completing a short feedback survey.

About HMRC

HMRC (His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs) is the body that collects tax on behalf of the government.

For directors of limited companies, HMRC can be a useful resource when it comes to dealing with taxation and your accounts.

Dealing direct with HMRC

Letters from HMRC

When you receive a letter from HMRC you should not ignore it or leave it for another day.

If there is anything in the letter that you do not understand, you should call HMRC using the telephone number on the letter or speak to your accountant for clarification or guidance.

Authorising a representative

You can authorise an accountant or tax adviser. This will let them submit your tax returns or speak to HMRC on your behalf.

You can also authorise family or friends to speak with HMRC and help you with tax returns if you cannot complete this yourself.

Personal tax accounts

Almost all HMRC’s services are now available digitally. Once you’ve created a Government Gateway user ID you’ll be able to view your personal tax position or your business tax position

Tax payments

If you are late paying tax, HMRC could see this as a sign your company is in distress. If you are facing payment problems HMRC should be contacted as soon as possible. There may be many ways to deal with problems you might be facing.
