Family circumstance and civil status letters

Letters explaining that British embassies and consulates do not issue certificates about civil or family status. Sometimes called information notes.

British embassies and consulates cannot issue certificates to confirm civil status, residency or family circumstances. This is because the UK does not have a central register that holds this information.

If you’re asked by local authorities to provide proof of this, download the relevant letter for free. You can get a signed and stamped version of a letter but this service costs £50.
