Integrated Waste Management Programme

Developing new waste management capability and opportunities to work group-wide as part of a broader integration programme to underpin the NDA’s and nation’s strategy of a more joined-up approach to waste management.

Integrated Waste Management Programme

The Integrated Waste Management Programme (IWMP) develops new capabilities and looks for opportunities to realise the benefits of cross-group working. Its aim is to ensure waste is managed in a more integrated way, from waste generation to disposal, removing barriers and promoting value-based decision making.

Specific accountabilities:

  • Deliver work to convert, incubate and develop new waste management capabilities

  • Develop and implement relevant national and NDA strategies for integrated waste management

  • Deliver relevant work scope and support for Nuclear Waste Services lines of business and enabling functions

  • Advise on changes to programmes (scope, speed)

  • To find out more, take a look at the Integrated Waste Management Programme Annual Review 2021.

National Waste Programme

The National Waste Programme (NWP), which is part of the IWMP, was established to implement the UK LLW Strategy, and is an industry wide collaboration led by Nuclear Waste Services on behalf of the NDA.

The UK LLW Strategy, first published in 2010 (revised 2016), has three guiding themes:

  • Application of the Waste Hierarchy
  • The best use of existing LLW management assets
  • The need for new fit for purpose waste management routes
