Join the Latin Excellence Programme

This programme funds and supports non-selective state schools to teach Latin at key stages 3 and 4.

What you can get

The Latin Excellence Programme is based on the model of the successful Mandarin Excellence Programme. Participating schools will receive high quality Latin teaching and resources with the aim of improving uptake and attainment in the subject at GCSE.

The programme offers:

  • funding to increase Latin provision
  • a fully resourced, evidenced-based key stage 3 and key stage 4 curriculum to support all students regardless of starting knowledge
  • enrichment activities and trips for all students
  • school visits from expert practitioners 6 times each year
  • regular, high-quality continuing professional development (CPD) for teaching Latin in the state sector

Who can join the programme

The Latin Excellence Programme is delivered by the Centre for Latin Excellence, established by the multi-academy trust, Future Academies. They are inviting non-selective state schools in the North, Midlands and South West of England to join the Latin Excellence Programme.

Schools joining the programme are expected to have an Ofsted rating of good or outstanding and be at, or working towards, an EBacc entry rate of 40% or more.

When it’s available

The Latin Excellence Programme started in schools in September 2022. New places are available in September 2023.

What it costs

The programme is free.

How to apply

To join the Latin Excellence Programme, school leaders will need to complete a short application form available from the Centre for Latin Excellence.
