SIA grant for good causes: how to apply

Guidance on how charities and community interest companies in the UK can apply for funding from the Security Industry Authority’s grant for good causes.

Through our grant for good causes fund, we distribute money we have received through proceeds of crime confiscation orders. We give this money to registered charities and community interest companies in the UK.

We are accepting applications for funding now. Apply by 11:59pm on Friday 21 February 2025 to be considered.

How we get money for the fund

The Proceeds of Crime Act allows us to:

  • investigate the financial activity of people who have committed a criminal offence
  • seize the money criminals have made from their criminal acts, using a court-issued confiscation order

The Asset Recovery Incentivisation Scheme allows us to keep some of the money we seize.

How we use the money

The money we recover through confiscation orders can only be:

  • used to fund our financial investigations
  • distributed to good causes

We use some of the money to make grants to good causes that benefit the UK private security industry and support public safety.

We consider applications for funding at least once a year, and more often if we receive more money to give out.

Who can apply for a grant?

You must be a registered charity or community interest company to apply for a grant. You must also be able to show how the grant will support one or more of the following:

  • people working, or intending to work, in the UK private security industry
  • the UK private security industry as a whole
  • public protection in the UK (for example, by preventing terrorism and crime, or protecting vulnerable people and communities)

We may include other conditions for each round of funding. For example, we might ask for applications from a particular geographical area or type of project.

We will publish details of any extra conditions each time we open for applications.

How to apply for a grant

Send your application as a Word document or PDF to grantapplications@sia.gov.uk. The deadline for applications is 11:59pm on Friday 21 February 2025.

Your application must be no longer than 2,000 words. You must tell us:

  • your name, email address and phone number
  • the name of your organisation
  • your registered charity number or company number
  • how your project will benefit the private security industry and/or protect the public
  • why you need funding
  • how much money you need
  • how you will report back to us about how you used the money

We will not consider applications that do not provide all these details.

We may ask you for more information, carry out open-source research or check information with other government organisations.

How we award the money

A grants committee decides how the money is allocated. The committee is made up of SIA staff and representatives from the private security industry.

The committee will consider:

  • how much your proposal will benefit the private security industry or help to protect the public
  • the quality of the information you provide to support your application
  • your plans to report on how you used the money

We will give you our decision by 7 March 2025. If we approve your application, you will need to sign a grant agreement before we provide any funding.

There is no guarantee that you will receive funding.
