Overview
You can find general information on notarial and document services abroad, including advice on legalising documents, getting married, and registering a birth or death abroad.
The British Embassy can provide an affirmation of marital status for British nationals in Myanmar. Where local notaries can provide services, the British Embassy will not provide them. This will be the case for most notarial services requested.
The British Council in Myanmar provides a Document Verification Service to verity academic certificates. See details on how to apply for the service and its cost. You must make an appointment for each service that requires your personal attendance. Use the links after each service to make a reservation. A member of staff will contact you to confirm your appointment.
Before booking, make sure you have selected the correct service and that the document will be accepted by the relevant authority. This could be the local town hall, registry office, tax authorities, immigration office or another authority either in Myanmar, the UK or a third country.
Services we provide in Myanmar
The British embassy in Yangon can only provide notarial services for British nationals in Myanmar where the requesting authority and the applicant can provide evidence that no other alternative is acceptable.
Where evidence can be provided, we can perform the following services by confirmed appointment only:
- administer an oath, affirmation or affidavit
- make a certified copy of a British passports
If you need your UK university degree certificate to be legalised (apostille), visit the Legalisation Office website for further information. The British consulates general and British embassy in Yangon cannot provide certified copies of educational certificates for legalisation purposes by the Legalisation Office. What to bring to your appointment
You must have a confirmed appointment before you come to the consulate or embassy. Once your appointment is confirmed, you will need to present the following documents on the day:
- prepared documents – the consulate or embassy will not draft documents for you. You must have the document drawn up and/or checked by a professional
- proof of identity and proof of address – we accept British passports and national identity cards as proof of identity. We accept recent utility bills, bank/building society statements (not ones printed off the internet), or any official documents from the town authorities as proof of address
- the correct fee – see the full list of consular fees and payment options

Payment
We accept payment by cash in the local currency on the day of the appointment.
Administer an oath, affirmation or affidavit
This service is for people who need to swear an oath, make an affirmation or make an affidavit in front of a consular officer.
The consulate will not draft documents for you. First check with the consulate what format they need and then have the document drawn up or checked by a professional.

- proof of identity/address

We do not authenticate or certify documents issued by the UK, including passports, driving licences, education certificates or birth, marriage and death certificates. Please refer to the Legalisation Office who can confirm that a signature, seal or stamp on a UK public document is genuine.
Make a certified copy of a British passport
This service is for customers who need certified photocopies of British passports.
What you will need to bring with you:
- the original passport to be copied
- proof of identity/address – see what we will accept as proof
- the correct fee – we accept payment by cash only

Services provided elsewhere
We no longer witness life certificates for British nationals claiming a British pension abroad. Please refer to the list of people working in a recognised profession who can do this for you.

The Foreign, Commonwealth &Development Office holds and uses data for purposes notified to the Information Commissioner under the Data Protection Act 1998. Such personal data may be disclosed to other UK government departments and public authorities.
