Point prevalence survey on HCAI, AMU and AMS in England
A national point prevalence survey on healthcare associated infections (HCAIs), antimicrobial use (AMU) and antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) in England, 2023.
Applies to England
Background
In 2022, there were an estimated 58,224 severe antibiotic-resistant infections and 2,202 associated deaths in England. For more data, see the English surveillance programme for antimicrobial utilisation and resistance report 2022 to 2023.
Surveillance of HCAIs and AMU is essential to inform infection prevention control and antimicrobial stewardship interventions. National point prevalence surveys (PPSs) for HCAIs and/or AMU have been conducted in England for the past 40 years.
The 2023 HCAI and AMU PPS gathered data across acute, community and mental health NHS Trusts and independent acute-care hospitals in England.
Data collection for the 2023 National Point Prevalence Survey (PPS) on healthcare associated infections (HCAI), antimicrobial use (AMU) and antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) in England ended on 7 December 2023.
Colleagues from 124 trusts and independent-sector organisations participated – 78 NHS acute trusts, 30 NHS community or mental health trusts and 16 independent sector organisations – and collected data on more than 56,000 patients.
Preliminary summary results have been shared with each participating trust and organisation and will allow benchmarking with peer-group hospitals in England to identify opportunities for improvement.
The national results of the 2023 PPS will be launched at a webinar and presented more widely through national conferences and meetings.
Survey aim
The survey was aimed at providing a snapshot of the burden of HCAI and describe AMU to allow meaningful comparisons between organisations and over time. This will also provide an opportunity to understand impact of changes to healthcare since the COVID-19 pandemic.
The results of the survey will:
- support development of local and national policies and procedures to reduce HCAIs and inappropriate antimicrobial use
- facilitate comparisons of HCAI and AMU across organisations in England and in an international context
- contribute to efforts to address antimicrobial resistance nationally and internationally through National and Global Action Plans
- allow benchmarking with peer group hospitals in England to identify opportunities for improvement
The survey period was from 18 September to 27 October 2023.
