Rural payments: use 'add land' service to link registered land to your business

Farmers and land owners can use the ‘add land’ email service to link land parcels to their business. Land parcels must already be registered in the Rural Payments service.

Applies to England

Your land parcels must be registered in the Rural Payments service and be linked to your single business identifier (SBI). If a land parcel is registered with us but does not show on your records in the Rural Payments service, you need to email us to ask us to link the land. This is known as ‘add land’.

You can use the ‘add land’ service to let us know about existing land parcels or new parcels that you have responsibility for as part of your business. For example:

  • at the end of a tenancy agreement when you regain responsibility for land parcels
  • if the land parcel has delinked in the Rural Payments service
  • if the parcel was historically part of a Defra scheme

If the parcel has been transferred to you, the land parcel should already be mapped. We will add a land link from the parcel to your SBI, to confirm responsibility and this will allow you to view and manage the parcel within the Rural Payments service.

You should not use this service to transfer land or to register a land parcel for the first time.

How to add land

You need to send us an email to ask us to add the land to your business. You should send the email from an email address registered to a person in the business in the Rural Payments service, with at least ‘amend’ application permission.

Please include ‘add land’ in the title of the email.

The email should include the following information:

  • the Single Business Identifier (SBI) and name of the business the land should be linked to
  • a brief reason for the request, for example to submit your application or claim (please specify the scheme)
  • the land parcel reference numbers for the parcels you want to add. Parcel ID numbers should be in the format of 2 letters followed by 8 numbers. For example, AB1234 5678
  • your name and contact number in case of any issues

Send your email to: ruralpayments@defra.gov.uk.

For  Countryside Stewardship (CS) customers, we will continue to work on requests to add land after the CS revenue claims window closes each year.

For Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) and expanded SFI offer customers, we will process email requests to add land throughout the year as there is no application deadline.

We  will send you an email (to the email address that the request was sent from) after the land parcels have been linked to your SBI.

In some cases, we may not be able to link the land parcel to your SBI, for example, if it has an outstanding mapping update. This means you will not be able to include the land parcel in an application or claim until the mapping updates have been completed. In this case, we will email you to confirm the parcel is unable to be linked to your SBI at this time.
