Learn what support is available and how to use your new online tax service.

After you’ve signed up to test Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, you’ll get access to a dedicated support team in HMRC. You’ll also be able to review and update your details through HMRC online services.

Before you continue, check you’ve completed all steps — including authorising your chosen software — in Before you sign up.

If you need help

If you need help to use Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, you’ll be able to contact HMRC’s dedicated customer support team. We’ll include the phone number when we write to you to confirm that you’ve signed up.

How the team can help

The team can only help with tax queries for individuals using Making Tax Digital for Income Tax.

They can help you and your agent with:

  • income and expenses to include in your submissions
  • payments and refunds
  • filing dates
  • penalties
  • reporting of errors in calculations, statements, and payments resulting from submissions
  • Self Assessment and Capital Gains including years before Making Tax Digital for Income Tax
  • PAYE including tax codes

They cannot help with:

  • Corporation Tax
  • VAT
  • National Insurance (except for Self Assessment)

The team cannot give advice about specific software products.

If you need help with your software

Each product will work differently depending on how much the software provider has developed it.

Contact your software provider first for any questions about using compatible Making Tax Digital software, including authorising your software.

Your software provider should direct you to a different service to report any income sources their software does not cover.

Access your new tax service online

You can access your new Making Tax Digital for Income Tax through your existing HMRC online services account.

For individuals

Use the same Government Gateway user ID and password you used when you sign in to HMRC online services.

If you cannot access Making Tax Digital for Income Tax as a service:

  1. Sign in to your business tax account.

  2. Select Add a tax to your account to get online access to a tax, duty or scheme.

  3. Select Making Tax Digital for Income Tax.

  4. Answer the security questions.

For agents

Once authorised by your client, you can access their account details for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax from your agent services account homepage.

What you can do in your online account

For Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, you can:

  • view Self Assessment tax calculations
  • view quarterly update periods 
  • view quarterly update and Self Assessment return due dates
  • check what you owe
  • view your Self Assessment and property business details
  • add a new business
  • tell us when an income source stops (ceases)
  • make a payment

To make other changes to your business details, contact our customer support team.

What you can do in the future

You’ll be able to:

  • claim Self Assessment refunds
  • adjust a payment on account
  • set up regular payments (except for agents who cannot setup a client’s direct debit)
  • opt out of quarterly updates (all voluntary Making Tax Digital for Income Tax customers can do this)
  • update business details
  • give bank details for future refunds (except agents)
  • print Self Assessment tax calculations
  • view and appeal a penalty
  • submit a Self Assessment return for clients who are not using Making Tax Digital for Income Tax
