Use this calculator to work out employee National Insurance contributions for the current tax year, if you're an employee, employer, or a software developer.

This calculator will allow you to check how much in National Insurance contributions an employee needs to pay.

Using the calculator

If you’re an employee

Use the calculator to find out if the amount of National Insurance contributions you’ve paid is correct.

If you’re an employer

Use the calculator to find out how much National Insurance you need to deduct from your employees’ pay.

If you’re a software developer

Check the payroll software you have developed is calculating National Insurance contributions for employees and employers correctly.

Before you start

This calculator is only for the current tax year.

You’ll need:

  • the period of pay, which could be:
    • weekly
    • every 2 weeks
    • every 4 weeks
    • monthly
  • the date you were paid, if you’re an employee
  • the date you paid your employee, if you’re an employer
  • the amount paid before any deductions
  • the employee’s National Insurance category letter — this can be found on the employee’s payslip
