Some content of this manual is being considered for archiving. If there is content you use regularly, please email hmrcmanualsteam@hmrc.gov.uk to let us know as soon as possible.
Customers wishing to pay by Bank Giro should take their HMRC payslip and payment, by either cheque or cash, to their own bank branch. Cheques should be made payable to 'HM Revenue & Customs only' followed by their reference number.
It usually takes up to three bank working days for the payment to reach HMRC. Bank working days are Monday to Friday excluding bank holidays.
Although payment may be made through any bank, it is recommended that customers use their own bank branch as other banks may not accept the payment or may charge for the service.
Note: Banks do not normally accept a cheque for over £1,000 unless it is drawn on their bank.
Indirect taxes
If customers intend to pay by Bank Giro they will need to phone one of the following numbers and request a book of Bank Giro paying-in slips:
- for VAT - 03000 519 206
- for Aggregates Levy, Air Passenger Duty, Climate Change Levy, Insurance Premium Tax and Landfill Tax - 03000 592 688.
