EGL22200 - Relevant generating stations: location of generating station
Relevant generating stations are defined in F(2)A22/S280(1) by reference to their location, the means by which electricity is generated, and in some cases by the contractual arrangements under which they sell their power to the wholesale market.
An electricity generating station can be a relevant generating station if it is located in the United Kingdom, its territorial sea, or any wider area of the seas around the United Kingdom that are designated as a Renewable Energy Zone under the Energy Act 2004. Offshore wind generation connected to the UK is often sited outside what would otherwise be regarded as UK territory but is within a designated Renewable Energy Zone, so is within the scope of the EGL.
Electricity imports and exports
There are several power grid connections between the UK and neighbouring states that allow for power to be both imported and exported, known as interconnectors. An interconnector is not itself regarded as generating station for the purposes of the EGL.
A power station located in another territory (outside of the United Kingdom) is not a relevant generating station, even if its generation output is imported to the United Kingdom via an interconnector. A power station can be a relevant generating station if its power is wholly or partly exported from the United Kingdom via an interconnector; the determinative factor is the territory in which the station is situated.
