Imagery Library for Intelligent Detection Systems

Information about the Imagery Library for Intelligent Detection Systems (i-LIDS) and available datasets, including event detections scenarios.

This guidance was withdrawn on

Please note that as of 30th November 2014 CAST is no longer distributing i-LIDs datasets.

Evaluations continue to be offered on a commercial basis by BRE.

The Imagery Library for Intelligent Detection Systems (i-LIDS) is the government’s benchmark for video analytics (VA) systems. It has been developed by the Centre for Applied Science and Technology (CAST) in partnership with the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure (CPNI).

i-LIDS comprises a library of CCTV video footage based around ‘scenarios’ central to the government’s requirements. The footage accurately represents real operating conditions and potential threats.

For more information read the i-LIDS brochure or contact the i-LIDS team.

i-LIDS datasets

i-LIDS currently has the following datasets available for distribution and evaluation.

Event detection scenarios:

  • sterile zone
  • parked vehicle
  • abandoned baggage
  • doorway surveillance
  • new technologies

Tracking scenario:

  • multiple camera tracking

The datasets for these scenarios are available in training and test formats. You can find out more about the scenario definitions in the i-LIDS user guide.

Event detection scenarios

The datasets for the event detection scenarios each contain approximately 24 hours of footage. Each of these datasets is filmed to represent all weather conditions, time of day and scene densities expected within the scenario. The multiple camera tracking scenario datasets each contain approximately 50 hours of real world footage.

Each dataset consists of 2 or 3 camera views, referred to as stages, and is further segmented into shorter video clips of 30 to 60 minutes. The training dataset is further split into individual events. We supply each dataset with a user guide detailing the library structure, user interface and the procedure used to evaluate the systems against the relevant scenario.

Please note that CAST will cease to provide datasets after 30 Nov 2014. Alternative methods of provision are currently under review.

To apply for a dataset, please complete the dataset application form and either the academic end user licence agreement or commercial end-user licence agreement and return them to the i-LIDS team.

See the i-LIDS user guide for information about dataset pricing.

Annual scenario evaluation

CAST will shortly be offering an opportunity for a New Technologies evaluation over the coming weeks. Please contact the i-LIDS team for further information.

Due to a lack of submissions against the Multiple Camera Tracking (MCT) scenario, neither CAST nor CPNI will be offering evaluation opportunities for this scenario. Should any developers yield systems that look promising against this very challenging scenario, then CAST would be interested to hear from you.

Evaluation enquires for the remaining scenarios should now be directed to CPNI at the following address: cse@cpni.gsi.gov.uk.

Please be aware that BRE continue to offer evaluations against Sterile Zone scenarios.
