Synopsis
Grounding of general cargo vessel on Camber Sands, Rye, after dragging anchor.
Action taken
A Chief Inspector’s letter was sent to the owner, master and the flag state highlighting the following safety issues:
- The need to carefully plan the position of anchorage, taking into consideration the prevailing weather conditions and forecast
- The need to have main engines ready for immediate manoeuvre, especially in a poor weather forecast The need to use all available means to prevent dragging anchor, which include the immediate use of the second anchor and/or letting go the remainder of cable on the anchor in use
