Application of the UK conformity mark: UK21/G025
Adopted EU recommendation GEN-049. UK approved recommendation on the correct application of the UK conformity mark (the “Red Ensign”).
Question
Some UK Approved Bodies are insisting that the UK conformity symbol of the “Red Ensign” affixed to marine equipment is displayed by enclosing it in a box outline and will not accept it otherwise.
Recommendation
It is not compulsory to apply / display the Red Ensign included in a box outline.
The correct and relevant symbol is the Red Ensign itself. It should be allowed to display the Red Ensign either with or without a box outline according to the manufacturer’s choice, providing that the proportions as outlined in Annex 5 of MSN 1974 as amended are respected.
