Approval of line-throwing appliances: UK21/L012

Adopted EU recommendation LSA-055. UK approved recommendation on the approval of line-throwing appliances.

Question

According to the Life Saving Appliances (LSA) Code, paragraphs 7.1, 7.2 and 7.3, every line-throwing appliance shall include no less than 4 projectiles, “…and include not less than 4 lines.”

If there are single units in the market with one rocket and one line, approved as a line-throwing appliance, what kind of marking should be affixed and in which way can the request of the quantities (4 pieces) be ensured by Approved Bodies? Is a single unit approval acceptable?

Recommendation

Although the functionality of line throwing appliances may be tested and approved as single units, only line-throwing packages or units at least containing 4 projectiles and 4 lines shall be red ensign-marked to meet the requirements of the LSA Code.

New production of single units should clearly show information on each single unit, that a line-throwing appliance consists of 4 single units at any time.
