NOx analysers for use on board: UK21/P004

Adopted EU recommendation POL-012. UK approved recommendation on the use of a NOx analyser on board as per NOx Technical Code 2008.

Question

MSN 1874 as amended clearly states under item list UK/2.8; “NOx analyser permanently placed on board and for use on board as per NOx Technical Code 2008” shall be approved in accordance with the listed standards.

The NOx Technical Code 2008 and Guidelines for SCR systems (MEPC.291(71)) however may require NOx measurements in following cases: 1. On board tests for engines not pre-certified on a test bed (2.2.4.1 of NTC 2008), 2. Re-testing of engines fitted with NOx reducing device due to failing in reaching the emission value at the time of pre-certification (2.2.5.2 of NTC 2008), 3. On board simplified measurement method as on board verification (6.3 of NTC 2008), 4. Direct measurement and monitoring method as on board verification (6.4 of NTC 2008), 5. Periodical spot checks for engines with SCR (paragraph 2 of Appendix VII to NTC 2008 and 3.2.8.2.3 of MEPC.291(71), 6. NOx measurement for SCR reductant control strategy (3.2.8.1 of MEPC.291(71)), and 7. On board confirmation test for engine fitted with SCR certified by scheme B (7.5 and 7.6 of MEPC.291(71)).

Which NOx measurement equipment as listed in the above 7 situations are subject to approval as required by item UK/2.8 of MSN 1874 as amended?

Recommendation

Considering that only equipment covering the requirements of indent d) above is permanently installed on board, only equipment for the direct measurement and monitoring method as on board verification (6.4 of NTC 2008), is subject to Approval.
