Requirement for Span Gas used to calibrate the Gas Analysers: UK23/P002

UK approved recommendation UK23/P002 on the calibration requirements for Span Gas for on board exhaust gas cleaning systems. Adopted EU recommendation POL-017.

Question

  1. What is the minimum calibration requirement for Span Gas used to calibrate a Gas Analyser? Do we require ISO 17025 certification from the Span Gas provider, or is it acceptable if the gas analyser is designed, tested and type approved in accordance with IMO Resolution MEPC.184(59)?

  2. What is the minimum calibration requirement for the buffer solution to calibrate the pH, PAH turbidity sensors? Is it necessary to have ISO 17025 certification from pH, PAH turbidity buffer solution providers or is it acceptable if pH, PAH turbidity sensors are designed, tested and either type approved or manufacturer declare in accordance with the standard indicated by Resolution MEPC.259(68)?

Recommendation

  1. Where Span Gas is provided by a third party, the provider should be an ISO 17025 certified company.

  2. The provider of the pH, PAH, turbidity buffer solutions do not necessarily need to be ISO 17025 certified company(s) as long as pH, PAH, Turbidity sensors are designed in accordance with the standard indicated by Resolution MEPC.259(68), and a document is provided with the span gas by the provider stating its chemical/physical composition.
