Testing standard for breathing apparatus: UK21/F014

Adopted EU recommendation FIRE-052.UK approved recommendation on the correct testing standards for breathing apparatus.

Question

It is noted that the EN 137 standard for self-contained breathing apparatus (BA) sets has two classifications for BA sets:

  • Type 1 – Apparatus for industrial use
  • Type 2 – Apparatus for fire fighting

The EN 137 standard has some differences between the two types of BA set. For example, when considering the face mask, the industrial sets have, as a minimum, a class 2 full face mask (EN136), and fire fighting sets will have a minimum class 3 full face mask. In addition, fire fighting sets will be exposed to additional tests such as flame engulfment and radiation resistance tests.

What, therefore, if the acceptable testing standard for a BA set?

Recommendation

Taking the above into account, and to ensure consistency when applying test standards and issuing certification between Approved Bodies, it is recommended that all Approved Bodies apply the higher test standard when accepting BA sets for item UK/3.7 type 2 apparatus for fire-fighting.
