Testing standards for EN 61162: UK21/N003

Adopted EU recommendation NAV-015. UK approved recommendation on the correct application of testing standards for EN 61162 series.

Question

MSN 1874 as amended refers to the testing standards for interfaces EN 61162 series in each single item as following:

  • EN 61162-1:2016
  • EN 61162-2:1998
  • EN 61162-3:2008 +A1:2010+A2:2014
  • EN IEC 61162-450:2018

There are no further detailed definitions of which testing standard should be applied for the related item. Specific requirements on the interface are defined in the related testing standards.

  1. Which interface shall or must be specified as approved interface on the UK Assessment certificate?
  2. Can an additional interface (-450) be part of the UK Assessment?
  3. Can an additional interface (-450) be addressed as approved in the UK certificate?
  4. Can an additional interface (-450) be in use for the installation on board?

Recommendation

  1. The minimum interfaces to be approved are stated in the IMO performance standards and IEC test standards
  2. If additional interfaces are provided these shall be assessed against the relevant IEC standards.
  3. The additional interfaces approved for interconnecting other equipment shall be addressed in the certificate (ref. the Merchant Shipping (Marine Equipment) Regulations 2016 as amended, Schedule II, 7(d): “a United Kingdom type-examination certificate… must contain all relevant information to allow the conformity of manufactured products with the examined type to be evaluated and to allow for in-service control.”)
  4. Yes, but only if addressed in the certificate as an approved interface.
