UK guidance on ISO 5489:2024: UK24/L003

UK approved recommendation UK24/L003 on the ISO 5489:2024 testing standards under category UK/1.29 of MSN 1874 amendment 9.

Question

MSN 1874 amendment 9 indicates in UK/1.29 that the testing standards for embarkation ladders should be ISO 5489:2008. Should this be amended to ISO 5489:2024?

Recommendation

ISO 5489:2024, published on 29th February 2024 replaces ISO 5489:2008 which has been technically revised.

It specifies requirements for a ship’s embarkation ladder that is provided for safe embarkation of waterborne survival craft along a vertical portion of the ship’s hull.

The main changes are as follows:

• Normative references in Clause 2 have been updated;

• Clause 3 (Terms and Definitions) has been added;

• Clause 4 has been harmonised with ISO 799-1:2019;

• Annexes A and B have been added.

As such, the updated ISO 5489:2024 will also be acceptable for equipment certificated under UK/1.29 of MSN 1874 amendment 9.

This will be updated in MSN 1874 amendment 10 when published.
