Hazard

The lifts present a serious risk of the vehicle falling from the lift with the potential of causing death or serious injury through the following issues:

  • The lifts may have been supplied with a mixture of bolts marked as grade 4.8 and 8.8 to secure the arm restraint mechanism. The bolts marked as 4.8 are not of adequate strength.

  • Bolts marked as grade 8.8 may be of insufficient strength to meet the standard for grade 8.8 bolts.

  • The safety and strength of the arm restraint mechanism relies on the 8.8 bolts being tightened to the correct torque. There is a lack of safety critical instructions regarding the appropriate torque required to ensure adequate strength.

Affected lifts do not satisfy the requirements of the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008.

For lifts manufactured between January 2010 and January 2014 please refer to existing HSE Safety Bulletin www.hse.gov.uk/safetybulletins/bendpak-two-post-vehicle-lifts.htm

For lifts manufactured after 2014 a HSE Safety Bulletin is being issued. Please refer to the HSE website www.hse.gov.uk/safetybulletins/index.htm

Corrective action

For lifts manufactured between January 2010 and January 2014 please refer to existing HSE Safety Bulletin www.hse.gov.uk/safetybulletins/bendpak-two-post-vehicle-lifts.htm, or manufacturer issued Technical Service Bulletin 42-102017. The manufacturer has made available replacement parts.

For lifts manufactured after 2014 the manufacturer has been notified of requirement to contact persons supplied to provide updated user instructions and have withdrawn affected products from the GB market.

Users should check any Bendpak two-post vehicle lift in the XPR range to ensure that it has the correct grade of bolt (8.8) securing the arm restraint gear mechanism and that it is tightened to the appropriate torque. If manufactured prior to January 2014 users should also check the design of the gear ring in line with HSE Safety Bulletin www.hse.gov.uk/safetybulletins/bendpak-two-post-vehicle-lifts.htm. Users should not use the vehicle lift if any of the issues are identified. Please contact your supplier for more information about the action to take if affected.
