Hazard
When assembled as intended on the rear of a refuse collection vehicle (RCV) and used in automatic mode, it is possible for operatives or members of the public to access the dangerous moving parts of the lifting machinery when no bin is present. This can lead to unintentional activation of the sonar “start” sensor resulting in:
- Risk of entanglement with the lifting machinery resulting in injuries,
- Risk of a being lifted by the machinery and tipped into the vehicle hopper.
- Risk of being crushed by the automatic compaction mechanism.
The product is supplied as partly completed machinery but has either CE or CE and UKCA mark applied, giving the appearance of a fully conformity assessed complete machine. Partly completed machinery should not bear conformity marking.
The product does not meet the requirements of the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008
Corrective action
The product has been voluntarily withdrawn from the GB market by the manufacturer until it has been brought into compliance.
The manufacturer is working to design a retrofit option to ensure the safety of existing machines.
We recommend owners of RCV’s utilising this product contact their supplier for further information.
