Traditional term for wine

Summary

Refers to wines of excellent quality with production rules that are much stricter than for other wines. The product specification provides for the following differences compared to wines not entitled to use the term: (a) the grape yield per hectare is lower by at least ten percent; (b) the natural alcoholic strength of the grapes is higher by at least 0.5° vol; (c) the total alcoholic strength of the wine is higher by at least 0.5° vol. Except as provided for pre-existing designations, the term may not be combined with ‘novello’ or ‘riserva’.
