Check how to register for Self Assessment

You're already registered for Self Assessment

You must file your Self Assessment tax return online before the deadline of 31 January.

If you became self employed after registering for Self Assessment, you still need to register for Self Assessment as a sole trader. This will register you for Class 2 National Insurance contributions and help you qualify for benefits like the State Pension.

If you cannot use the online form

You can use form CWF1 to register for Self Assessment as a sole trader.

You’ll need your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) number.

The address to send the form to is:

Self Assessment
HM Revenue and Customs
BX9 1AN
United Kingdom

If you did not use the online service last year

Create your tax account and sign up for Self Assessment.

You’ll usually get an activation code for your new account in the post within 7 working days (21 if you’re abroad).

If you have not received your activation code within 7 (or 21 days), you can check when to expect it.

When you get the code, sign in to activate your Self Assessment.

You can replace an activation code if you do not receive it or you lose it.
