A human rights-based approach to neglected tropical diseases

Abstract

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) affect one billion people around the world, often the most vulnerable populations living in poor rural areas. A source of social stigma and poverty, NTDs can result in lifelong disability and even death. Affected populations often do not have access to treatment and preventive measures, and research and development have been insufficient. This WHO information sheet, developed jointly with TDR and WHO's Department of Health, Ethics and Trade, aims to improve understanding about NTDs among health planners, human rights groups, development partners and civil society organizations.
