A randomised trial of monitoring practice and structured treatment interruptions in the management of antiretroviral therapy in adults with HIV infection in Africa: the DART trial.
Abstract
This poster describes the DART (Developing Antiretroviral Therapy in Africa) trial, which compares clinical monitoring only with laboratory and clinical monitoring, and structured treatment interruptions (STIs) with continuous treatment, in 3300 symptomatic HIV-infected patients in Uganda and Zimbabwe. Laboratory monitoring is difficult to provide in Africa, so it is useflul to know whether or not it is essential, and STIs are a potentially useful way of reducing drug toxicity. The results at the time of writing (at a fairly early stage in the 4-year trial) are described.
