Agricultural productivity seminar: Notes

Agricultural economist Professor Peter Hazell and agroecologist Professor Amir Kassam tackled aspects of agricultural productivity

Abstract

This session, the second in a series of professional development seminars on the role of agriculture in development, was held at DFID on 21 March 2013. Agricultural economist Professor Peter Hazell and agroecologist Professor Amir Kassam tackled differing aspects of agricultural productivity.

Professor Peter Hazell discussed the approach of targeting agricultural productivity, and considered the different assistance needs of market oriented small farms, smallholders in transition who are moving out of farming, and subsistence oriented small farmers. Professor Amir Kassam discussed the intensification of sustainable production and the role of conservation agriculture. Further discussion was led by DFID’s Chief Economist, Professor Stefan Dercon.
