An assessment of spoken English competence among school students, teachers and adults in Bangladesh. Baseline Study 1
Abstract
English is taught as a compulsory subject in Bangladeshi schools, both at primary and secondary levels. While the national 'English for Today' curriculum stresses communicative use of the language, this does not appear to be effectively implemented as widespread concerns have been expressed about the ability of students to communicate in English. Within the school system in Bangladesh there is no formal testing of oral or aural skills in English. Baseline Study 1 was planned to collect data about the spoken English competence of Bangladeshi school students, teachers and adults in the community validated in relation to a well-established and internationally recognised graded scheme.
