An audit of current materials for teaching English in Bangladesh. Baseline Study 4

Abstract

English is taught as a compulsory subject in Bangladeshi schools, both at primary and secondary levels. While the national 'English for Today' curriculum stresses communicative use of the language, this does not appear to be effectively implemented as widespread concerns have been expressed about the ability of students to communicate in English. The background to this audit of materials to take place at the beginning of the EIA Project was an attempt to try and understand the various threads of English language materials and to see what was already in use in schools and colleges. This forms a baseline of materials in use in English, particularly in relation to spoken English.
