An overview of development studies: background paper.

Abstract

An understanding of the development studies literature and how this has eveloved over time is provided to inform work on the relationships between religions and development. The review starts by examining the meaning of 'development' and different approaches to development. The debates leading to the current pre-occupation with poverty reduction are summarised. Self-styled alternatives to the mainstream areas of development literature are then briefly discussed. Finally, an outline of some areas within the development studies literature that deal with issues of religion/faith is included.
