An Overview of the Water Supply and Sanitation System at the Metropolitan and Peri-Urban Level: the Case of Dar es Salaam.

Abstract

This report presents background information about the Dar es Salaam metropolitan area highlighting the existing Water and Sanitation Service System (WSS) as well as trends in the two peri-urban study areas. The main actors involved in WSS, their potentials, constraints and opportunities to improve WSS are also presented. In addition, recent measures taken by the Government of Tanzania (GoT) to privatise DAWASA including strategies, financial arrangements and institutional settings which are intended to improve WSS among low income city inhabitants are also outlined.

The report therefore provides a general account on the WSS situation in the metropolitan area and sets the scene on the basis of which WSS conditions in the case study can be understood.

The version of the report that can be downloaded here does not contain illustrations. A full version of the report with illustrations can be downloaded from The Development Planning Unit website, where the illustrations alone can also be downloaded.
