An unusual new species of Hedychridium Abeille (Hymenoptera: Chrysididae) from Africa

Only 45 species of the wasp, Hedychridium, have been described from continental sub-Saharan Africa

Abstract

Only 45 species of the wasp, Hedychridium, have been described from continental sub-Saharan Africa. Because of the diversity of habitats and potential hosts, this seems to be a substantial underestimate of the actual species diversity of the genus in Africa.

In this article, the authors describe a new species, Hedychridium buffingtoni Kimsey & Copeland, sp. n., from two male specimens collected in Kasaala, Kenya. The new species displays extreme modifications of some of the more unusual features seen in African species, especially on the posterior part of the body.

This is an output from Biosystematics Unit programme on insect diversity. It is partly funded by the UK Department for International Development, a core donor of the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology.
