Assessment of Smallholder Indigenous Poultry Producer Viability in Thailand.
Abstract
This working paper discusses a survey-based assessment of the viability of indigenous poultry producers after HPAI in Thailand. Although Thailand has the most advanced and extensive modern poultry industry in the Mekong Region, backyard smallholder production remains ubiquitous among the country’s rural poor majority. This group has been adversely affected by both HPAI outbreaks and control measures taken in response to them. A set of five surveys were carried out in three provinces (Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, and Nakhon Phanom) spanning the North and Northeast regions of Thailand. These survey results can inform policymakers about the design of more socially-effective responses to HPAI and other animal disease risks.
