Biotechnology helps engineer resistance to rice nematodes. Validated RNRRS Output.

Abstract

This is one of 280 summaries describing key outputs from the projects run by DFID's 10-year Renewable Natural Resources Research Strategy (RNRRS) programmes.

Principally based on Projects R6453, R6948, R7294 and R8031. An effective and biosafe method of controlling nematode worms in rice is now ready for trials in ricegrowing countries. Nematodes are a serious pest in a wide range of crops and the technique is generating a lot of interest, particularly in South Asia, Africa and South America. Tested on a wide range of crops in the USA, China and Uganda, the technology is already being used in both developed and developing-world countries. It has great potential for agriculture in India and China where governments strongly support biotechnology as a way to rapidly raise food production.

The CD has the following information for this output: Description, Validation, Current Situation, Current Promotion, Impacts On Poverty, Environmental Impact. Attached PDF (11 pp.) taken from the CD.
