Bottlenecks in India’s Transition to Electric Mobility

Spotlight on institutional and policy arrangements, infrastructure gaps, and local manufacturing constraints relating to electric vehicles

Abstract

The Indian automobile industry is the fourth largest in the world. Over 210 million cars, two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and other vehicles currently ply the country’s roads. India has demonstrated its commitment to transition to electric vehicles and is part of the Electric Vehicle Initiative under the global Clean Energy Ministerial.

This Energy Insight throws a spotlight on existing institutional and policy arrangements, infrastructure gaps, and local manufacturing constraints relating to electric vehicles, and on the impact of rapid electric vehicle uptake on the power grid.

This research is part of the Energy and Economic Growth Applied Research Programme.
