Briefing Note 2. MEMA kwa Vijana: Randomised controlled trial of an adolescent sexual health programme in rural Mwanza, Tanzania.

Abstract

In 1999-2002, 9645 adolescents from 62 schools and 18 health facilities in rural Mwanza were recruited into an intervention programme on sexual and reproductive health. The trial measured incidence of HIV, genital herpes and other STIs, pregnancy and respondants sexual behaviour. Analysis showed no consistent impact of the trial, though benefits were greater in males, and in those who received more of the in-school component. Explanations for the lack of consistency in results include; interventions change knowledge and skills, but not risk-taking; interventions may need more time to work; and additional interventions may be needed.
