Briefing paper No. 10. Screening for the mental health needs of people living with HIV.
Abstract
This policy brief summarises evidence on the prevalence of common mental health disorders (depression and/or anxiety) among HIV patients. It makes the case for routine screening of HIV patients for common mental disorders, and suggests two quick tools that are appropriate in resource-limited settings. This brief draws particularly on recent research in Zambia that assessed the level of common mental disorders among TB and HIV clinic patients, and validated two screening tools for use in this population. Finally, the policy brief emphasises the need to provide treatment and support services for those who are identified as having a mental health disorder.
This brief is aimed at those who make decisions on what services are provided for people living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa.
